Newport Pagnell’s Hidden History: Tickford Bridge, Aston Martin and Bury Field
Newport Pagnell has a rather impressive talent: it manages to feel like a friendly, familiar market town while quietly hiding some extraordinary stories.
You might have driven through a hundred times, popped in for a coffee or done the school run without giving its history a second thought.
But look a little closer and you’ll find centuries-old landmarks, a world-famous motoring connection and plenty of reasons to spend more time right on your doorstep.
Here are five things that make Newport Pagnell well worth rediscovering this autumn.
1. Tickford Bridge: A Little Piece of Engineering History
At first glance, Tickford Bridge might simply look like another way across the River Ouzel (also known locally as the Lovat).
In reality, it’s one of Newport Pagnell’s most remarkable landmarks.
Completed in 1810, the cast-iron road bridge is Grade I listed and is a rare surviving example of early iron engineering that still carries modern traffic.
Its graceful arches and circular ironwork are worth a closer look, especially if you usually cross without thinking about what’s beneath the road.
There’s a nearby pedestrian bridge, too, so you can appreciate the historic structure without standing in the way of the cars.
Not a bad achievement for something built more than two centuries ago!
2. Aston Martin: A Famous Name With Newport Roots
You don’t have to be a petrolhead to appreciate this one.
Newport Pagnell is the historic home of Aston Martin Works, where thousands of the marque’s cars were hand-built over the decades.
The Tickford Street site remains an important centre for heritage sales, servicing and restoration.
It’s an impressive connection for a town that doesn’t always shout about itself.
People around the world recognise the Aston Martin name, but plenty may not realise how closely its story is tied to Newport Pagnell.
Next time you’re chatting about local history, there’s your conversation starter sorted.
3. Bury Field: Fresh Air Without Going Far
When the week has been busy, sometimes the best plan is a walk with absolutely no plan at all.
Bury Field Common offers open space and a welcome change of pace close to the town centre.
Managed as common land, it includes grassland and a plantation, with routes for people who fancy stretching their legs and enjoying a bit of nature.
The common is also an important habitat for wildlife, including nesting skylarks in spring and early summer.
It’s a good reminder that protecting local green spaces matters just as much as enjoying them.
Autumn brings its own appeal: cooler air, changing colours and a good excuse to get outside before heading somewhere warm for a drink.
Paths can be uneven or muddy, so sensible footwear is a good idea.
4. St Peter and St Paul: History Above the High Street
At the top of the High Street stands the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, another striking part of Newport Pagnell’s identity.
The site has a history reaching back to Norman times, and its elevated position overlooks the valleys of the Great Ouse and the Ouzel.
It’s the sort of place that encourages you to slow down and notice the layers of history all around you.
Whether you’re interested in architecture, local heritage or simply discovering a part of town you’ve never properly explored, it’s worth taking a moment to admire.
5. Market Hill: A Reason to Shop Local
History is lovely, but a town stays special because of the people who keep it going today.
Newport Pagnell’s independent businesses, cafés and traders give the town its everyday character.
And if you enjoy browsing stalls, the Town Council lists a street market at Market Hill on the third Friday of each month.
That makes Friday 16 October 2026 the next scheduled market day.
As with any local event, it’s sensible to check with the organisers before making a special journey.
You don’t need to spend a fortune to support the town.
Pick up something from a local trader, try a café you haven’t visited before, leave a positive review or recommend a brilliant business to a friend.
Those small actions can make a real difference.
A Town Worth Talking About
What makes Newport Pagnell special isn’t just one famous bridge, one historic building or one well-known car manufacturer.
It’s the combination of old stories, open spaces and people who give the town its personality today.
So, next time you’ve got a free hour, don’t just pass through.
Take a look around. You might discover something you’ve been walking past for years.
And we’d love to hear from you:
